As of May 31, Minneapolis Public Schools has just over $111 million in ESSER pandemic relief funds unspent. The district provided the data to Minneapolis Schools Voices in response to a public records request. Of the remaining funding, the district has budgeted to spend about $89 million next school year. The district must spend the ESSERIII funds before September 30, 2024. The ESSERII grant expires on September 30, 2023. The federal government requires districts to spend 20% of the ESSERIII funding on “learning loss”. Those expenditures must be on new services and cannot pay for ongoing district expenses.
