Members of the Hmong Parent Advisory Committee gathered at the Davis Center on November 22 for an art exhibition celebrating the Hmong New Year. Gathered alongside them were some members of the Minneapolis Public Schools Board of Directors and some other members of the Minneapolis Public Schools community.

“It’s wonderful for the kids to see their wonderful culture. We’re starting to lose that and this motivates the kids to participate and learn their culture” said Jerry Toojnxawg Lee, an HPAC member and MPS father of eight. “I want all of my community to see the Hmong culture. It’s easy to say you value and respect someone but hard to do if you don’t really know who I am.”

The exhibit is made up of artwork and clothing, amongst other creations, depicting elements of Hmong culture. You can view the exhibit in the Davis Center lobby.

My Nang, a Hmong-American mother, visited the exhibit alongside her two young daughters.

“Even though I was born and raised here, I never want my children to forget about our culture. I want them to remember why they are and where we’re from originally,” said Nang.

The Hmong Exhibition will run through December 14 at the Davis Center and it is open to all community members.
